We are currently taking applications for two summer high school educational programs that will take place on the UNM main campus.

The programs:  UNITE (sponsored by the US Army Educational Outreach Program) and the Summer Transportation Institute (sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration) and is for students entering the 10th and 11th grades in high school.

Both programs are packed with educational events designed to encourage students to pursue degree programs in engineering or other STEM related fields.

Both summer programs adhere to the same program schedule; however, the major difference between the two is that one is a commuter program where students commute to UNM each day (for their commuting, they are awarded a small stipend at the end of the program).  The other program is a residential program where the students live in the UNM dormitories for the duration of the program.

The dates for the programs are June 4th -23, 2017.  The deadline to apply is Friday, May 19th.

I have attached an application packet along with a flyer for this year's program.

Please share this information with students at your school that you think will be interested in a career in the STEM fields.

Thank you.

To prepare for registration, we’ll be having our annual Electives Day on Tuesday, February 7th.

Students will receive info about Electives Day during class meetings on Monday, February 6th.

  1. Students in grades 9, 10 and 11 will report to their Advisory classes to receive their forms and instructions. (12th graders will proceed to the PAC for an important class meeting.)
  2. Students put their names at the top of their form and choose three elective teachers they'd like to visit during the short sessions provided; finding alternate sessions would be a good idea in case some sessions are too crowded, and some electives are not available for all three sessions.
  3. Students must attend three different sessions and that they must have their form signed at each session.

As students proceed to their first choice sessions, electives representatives will remain in their rooms for their sessions.

Bells will ring to dismiss each session with a passing period. The sessions are 10 minutes each with 5 minute passing periods. Presenters, please keep students in your rooms until the bell rings. At 10:45, students will proceed to their 4th period class where their teachers will collect their forms.

Students who do not attend an elective for all three sessions will need to be turned in to the office for truancy.

The completed electives forms should be turned in to the Counselors (or Office) to consider to inform placement of students in classes for 2017-18.

The bell schedule for Electives Day is listed below. Thank you so much for your help and support for the broad variety of rich elective programs we have here at Manzano!

Attention Manzano Parents and Students:  The safety of our Monarch students is of utmost importance to us at Manzano.  Therefore, please review this map outlining our new student drop-off and pick-up traffic pattern.  This new traffic pattern will take effect on Monday, January 30.

We appreciate your patience with us, while we work at improving the traffic flow of our student drop-off and pick-up areas.  Our goal is to make parent and student drop-off/pick-up experiences safe and efficient.  Remember, school starts at 7:25.  Students should arrive before 7:15 to ensure all students are on time to class.

Raise.me helps students in 9th - 12th grades to discover colleges and earn scholarships for their academic and extracurricular achievements throughout high school. These bite-sized scholarships are called “Micro-Scholarships”.

When students add achievements to their Portfolio on Raise.me, they could be eligible to earn Micro-Scholarships towards our partner colleges. These achievements can include good grades, participating in clubs, playing on a sports team, volunteering, or even starting a club. They can include AP or IB courses, honors classes, and college-level courses, too.

My name is Ashleigh Reyna and I am the Underage Drinking Prevention Program Coordinator for Mothers Against Drunk Driving in New Mexico. As 2016 comes to a close and you prepare to start 2017, I wanted to bring our Underage Drinking Prevention programs to your attention.

MADD New Mexico offers two distinct programs to promote the prevention of alcohol and drug use in teens. All of our programs are evidence based and facilitated by trained and certified MADD staff. The average age of first alcohol consumption in New Mexico is 10 years of age and we need to work together to solve this problem. I would like to ask you to consider our programs for your school this school year.

Power of Youth is our general Underage Drinking Prevention presentation. Power of Youth lasts only 30 minutes but covers several topics such as, brain development, advertising, what to do in a dangerous situation, how to handle negative peer pressure, and goal setting. Power of Youth presentations are supplemented with then booklet “The 411 on Teen Drinking,” a booklet to educate and empower teens to take a stand against drinking underage and to never get in a car with someone who has been drinking as well at MADD ribbons and Power of Youth wristbands. Power of Youth can easily be adjusted to suit students of all ages

Power of Parents is our presentation geared towards parents and adults. Power of Parents is based on research completed by Dr. Robert Turrisi of Pennsylvania State University. The Power of Parents presentation is only 20 minutes long, leaving time for questions and also time for the many activities often present in parent lives. Power of Parents covers the dangers of underage alcohol use as well as techniques for talking with children and teens about alcohol use.

Dear Manzano Parents and Students,

Please make sure that your students get to campus between 7:10 am and 7:15 am, so they have enough time to get to their 1st period classes on time.  As you know, students should be in their classes before 7:25 am in order to ensure their instruction and education do not suffer.  For some students this may entail earlier bedtimes and/or wake-up times. For others, this may involve leaving home earlier to ensure sufficient time to navigate the parking lot, or drop-off rush.

Thank you so much for all you do to make your students successful!

Sincerely,

Dr Karen Webb, Principal
