Dear MHS Students,

A survey is different from a test. On a survey, you are asked for your opinion or point of view; there are no right or wrong answers, and you will not be graded.

This survey has 10 questions for you to read and answer.

For each question, you will read the question silently and choose the one answer that best explains your opinion. Your responses will help your teachers understand what they do well and how they may be able to improve.

Your individual responses are private. Your teachers will never get to see your individual answers, only a class summary of the responses. Remember, when you answer the questions, your answers should only be about your opinions of your class and not about any other teacher or classroom. Your answers should be based on how you feel about class every day – not just how you feel today.

The survey should take about 5 to 10 minutes to complete. Once you complete all the survey questions, please click on the blue submit button and it will close in a few seconds.

Please take a moment to complete the Opportunity to Learn Survey HERE. Submissions must be completed by May 1, 2018.

Thank you for your help!

March 3, 2018

Dear APS Students, Staff and Families:

There has been a lot of talk lately of planned protests and walkouts in response to the school shooting in Florida. We know of two planned national events:

At 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 14, the National School Walkout is calling for students to walk out of class for 17 minutes in honor of the 17 victims killed during the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., last month.

At 10 a.m. on Friday, April 20, which is the 19th anniversary of the Columbine High School mass shooting, students across the country are being encouraged to participate in the #NationalSchoolWalkout.

I am making you aware of these events because I want you to be informed. I also want you to be aware of our expectations for students and staff. Our top priority in Albuquerque Public Schools is to support the academic, social and emotional needs of our students while maintaining a safe and orderly learning environment for all.

Students:
As educators, we recognize that age-appropriate student activism is a part of the learning process. When students are passionate about an issue, they have an opportunity to connect curriculum to real life. Demonstrations can play an important role in this learning process, and we certainly respect your right to express yourself. However, we want you to do so in a way that doesn’t interrupt the educational day, that takes into consideration the different sides of the debate, and –  most importantly – that keeps you and others safe.

That is why we are encouraging student leaders to begin a conversation with their teachers, counselors and school administrators about alternative demonstrations that will enhance learning rather than disrupt class. Some suggestions include before and after school protests, lunchtime or weekend rallies, letter-writing or social media campaigns, debates or petition drives. La Cueva High School hosted a Remembrance Rally on campus during lunch shortly after the Florida shooting. And students leaders from the Zone 2 high schools gathered last night at West Mesa for a forum on how to keep schools safe. I commend these students for expressing themselves in ways that are educational, respectful and safe.

We also need to make sure that we keep in mind the age of our students. Rallies and protests probably aren't appropriate for our elementary school children. Maybe for them, schools provide an extra 17-minutes of playtime in honor of the shooting victims and in celebration of the innocence of childhood.

We can't stress enough how important it is to keep our students safe, which is why disorderly conduct that disrupts school operations is not acceptable and could result in discipline.

Parents:
We encourage you to talk to your child about how they may be feeling about school safety and the importance of expressing themselves in appropriate ways at school. We understand that some of them may be feeling lots of emotions, including anxiety, fear and even anger. Don’t hesitate to turn to the school for help. Our counselors, as well as teachers and administrators, are available to lend a helping hand.

Staff:
As educators, we need to be mindful of the multiple perspectives of an issue and respectful of all sides. While we shouldn't lead student efforts, we certainly can guide and encourage them to think deeply about the issues. We also need to be supportive of students who don’t want to get involved, who may not wish to voice an opinion.

Bottomline: We want our students to feel like they have a voice, but we also want them to be safe and in school when they're supposed to be. If we can come up with solutions that allow us to do both, we will all benefit.

These have been trying times for our community and our country. I am blessed to serve such a compassionate school district. I care so much about our students and am grateful for our staff and families. Take care of yourselves and of each other.

In light of the horrific school shooting in Florida, we have received numerous calls and emails from concerned parents and guardians wanting to know what measures Albuquerque Public Schools takes to keep its students and staff safe.

As Superintendent Reedy stated in a message posted to APS.edu and social media sites and shared with employees, we have asked all of our schools to review their site safety plans which include detailed instructions for a host of possible emergency situations including an active shooter on campus.

Here is some information we can share about how we address school safety:

· Our school safety plans include site and school-specific instructions relevant to each individual school, depending on the design and layout of the building.

· We require schools to practice lockdown, shelter-in-place and evacuation drills according to these site-specific plans during the school year.

· In all emergency scenarios, we remind our students and staff to be responsive and follow the directions of all public safety responders.

· Fortunately for APS, we have our own Police Department that works closely with the Albuquerque Police Department and the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office. We have police and security officers assigned to many of our schools, and we have field officers who respond to incidences at all others.

· Any time a student or staff member sees a suspicious person on campus or encounters a person who is being disruptive, they are asked to contact a police or safety officer or administrator.

· Visitors to our schools are expected to check in at the front office and wear a visitor’s badge while on campus.

· We have security cameras in all of our schools.

· We take seriously every threat or rumor of a threat to students, staff or school. We conduct immediate investigations and take necessary disciplinary action.

· Anyone who hears of a possible threat to a school is encouraged to contact a school administrator or police. The APS Police Department can be reached at 505-243-7712.

· We do not discuss disciplinary actions because we are required by law to protect the privacy of all students, including students who may have made threats. However, we can say that students who make threats face disciplinary action that could include suspension and/or expulsion.

We all have a role to play in ensuring our schools continue to be a safe place for learning, and it is incumbent on all of us to be vigilant and supportive of one another. Remember, if you see or hear something, say something. You can contact APS School Police at 505-243-7712.

Good afternoon,

We regret to inform you about two unfortunate events that have affected our school community. Two former Kennedy Middle School students passed away this week. One student was an eighth grade grader at Kennedy last year. The other student attended Kennedy and was a freshman at Manzano last year.  Both were currently attending other APS high schools. Both students took their lives this week.

The Manzano Counseling Department has opened a Safe Room today and it will remain open through Friday, February 9, 2018.

You may want to talk to your child about death because it impacts each person in different ways. How children react depends on the relationship they had with the person who died, their age, and their prior experience with death.

Your child may exhibit any of the following normal responses:

  • Appear unaffected,
  • Ask questions about the death repeatedly,
  • Be angry or aggressive,
  • Be withdrawn or moody,
  • Be sad or depressed.

Here are some other resources to help your student with the loss.

Helping Children through Grief

From Bereavement and Support by Marylou Hughes

Taylor & Francis, 1995

Return to the normal household schedule as quickly as possible.  Children feel more secure with their regular routine.

Let the children know that they are protected and safe.  When they feel secure, they will be able to live through their grief.

Try to understand the children’s behavior.  If they do not have the words, they will express their grief through their behavior.

Involve the children in a ceremony that gives them an opportunity to say good-bye to their loved one.

Talk about bad dreams, or have the children draw a picture of the dream.  Have them rip up the picture and throw it away.

Do not be alarmed if the children play at dying or death.  This is a way for them to work through their feelings and fears.

It is meaningful for the child to do something to memorialize the loved one.

Plan something for the child to look forward to, such as a vacation or other enjoyable experience.

Let the children help out in age-appropriate ways.

When you are not available, make sure the children know that someone trustworthy is present.

Look at pictures of the deceased together.

Give the children tangible mementos of the person who died.

Let the children stay children.  Do not lean on them for comfort and support.

Let the school know of the death and let the children know you are doing this.  They may not want you to.  Do it anyway.  It is better for the children to know that the teacher and the other children know about the death than to suspect they might know.

"RENTERS RIGHTS and HOW to AVOID EVICTION" at Kennedy MS this Thursday, DEC. 7, from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm.

This presentation is timely in view of changes to the Housing Authority's Section 8-Housing, which, as we know, is severely impacting the most vulnerable of our citizens, and leading to an increase in evictions.

It's being presented by UNM's Legal Aid Clinic and Law School. There will be a few giveaways done as prize drawings.
