Midnight Haunting

The sun lowered and hid behind the mountains. The air smells good tonight. Tonight is the perfect night. Jamie, Nick, and I slowly started to make our way up the stairs. The school lights are off, but the moon light fell through the little windows above the lockers. We got a letter stating that we were to meet a person here at midnight. Nick and I said “No,” but Jamie said, “We should follow the note.”

“No one is here,” Nick snapped.

“You’re right. I’m sorry,” Jamie said.

“We told you it’s a bad idea to come,” I informed her.

“I know…” Jamie said.

We didn’t know who this person was, but we had a bad feeling about it. Tonight was Halloween night. Our plans to go to the movies went downhill fast when we decided to come here. There were footsteps coming from behind us. We took off, scared to death. Jamie fell to the ground groaning and holding her foot.

A man lifted up from the last step onto the hallway path. The man had a skull mask on with black shorts and a shirt on. Nick and I tried to pick up Jamie, but she fought away. The man got closer and grabbed Jamie by her good foot and dragged her away. Nick and I grabbed the man, but he elbowed us both in the head.

We woke up on the hallway floor; it was about 12:00 at night. Nick got up to his feet and helped me up. We ran downstairs, trying to track down the kidnapper. We soon split up as the lockers split up. I took the senior hall, Nick took the junior hall.

Nick walked down the hall slowly. Suddenly, there was a sharp pain in his shoulder. Nick looked at his shoulder. There was a hand holding a needle into his shoulder. Nick screamed. The hand started pushing some liquid into Nick, and Nick’s life went black.

I heard Nick’s scream and took off into the junior hall. I ran up and down the hall and never found Nick. Suddenly, I heard a sharp noise. I followed the noise and came to a door that I never knew about. It had Basement written on it. I opened the door and slowly lowered down each step of the stairs.

I came to the bottom and heard heavy breathing from every direction. I stepped on something and heard a groan. The lights came on. I spun around and saw the masked man coming down the stairs. I looked at what I was stepping on, Nick. I gasped and jumped to the side; I looked down and saw Jamie. I looked all around me and saw all these living breathing bodies that were knocked out. Living bodies that never made it out in time.

The man took off his mask. Principal Johnson. Mr. Johnson just looked at me and smiled. He then shook his head and laughed. “Welcome to detention,” Mr. Johnson said, and then there was a sharp pain in my shoulder.

Carving Out Good Times

It's Halloween time, and that means pumpkin carving time. More and more people will be looking for tips on decorating and carving pumpkins. This is because they all want that "perfect" Jack-O-Lantern.

The Irish brought the tradition of pumpkin carving to America. The tradition originally started with the carving of turnips. When the Irish immigrated to the U.S, they found pumpkins, and they were much easier to carve for their ancient holiday.

There are so many pumpkin carving patterns to choose from. Whether you prefer a ghoulish pumpkin design or a goofy one, it is always a great way to relax and spend fun, quality time with the family.

"Me and my family go to the pumpkin patch every year. It's awesome," explained John Chavez.

Many people have their own perceptions on how they want things done. Carving stencils, poking dots, or even the old-fashion way with a regular kitchen knife. Knives can be dangerous around little ones, so it is best just to buy a pumpkin carving kit. They are sold at a reasonable price, and you can find them at a variety of stores.

There is a lot more you can do with pumpkins besides carving. They make yummy treats. Pumpkins contain potassium and vitamin A! Some familiar snacks would be roasted pumpkin seeds, pumpkin pie, pumpkins bread, and pumpkin soup.

"I look forward to my grandma's pumpkin cookies with chocolate chips," explained Farah Clark.

There are many cool, interesting things to do with pumpkins. Halloween just isn't Halloween without them! Get out there, experiment, be safe, and have a fantastic Halloween, Monarchs!
