Keep Your Braincells

Open your cabinets and what do you see? Rubbing alcohol, Clorox, glue, permanent markers, air fresheners, etc. They might seem harmless but could actually be dangerous. These items are known as solvents, and the vapors are sniffed or breathed into the lungs. Abuse of household drugs is becoming more common and a problem in America.

Recreational prescription drugs are against the law. The most common medical drugs are vicodins, oxycodons, muscle relaxants, and any type of morphine. An estimated 20% of people in the United States use prescription drugs for no medical reasons, and 10% are teens.

Some teens are willing to do whatever it takes to get any kind of drugs. "Prescription drugs help as long as you don't over take them," Randall Roy shared with us. "Well, I think that they are good if you put them in a secure place were young adults aren't able to utilize them as drugs,” Vianet Madera commented with us.

Parents are aware of outside drugs but don't know what's going on inside their own cabinets. They buy household cleaners, but their kids might use it to breathe in. Prescription drugs they use for their own medical reasons, kids can use as a drug to inhale.

Some common side effects that may occur are glassy eyes, appetite loss, slurred speech, dizziness, or even a black out. A blackout is a complete loss of vision but retaining consciousness.

If you want to keep your brain cells, don't do drugs. Oxycodone abuse kills brain cells, heart tissue, damages kidneys, and has terrible side effects.

Overdosing is a rising cause of death in America. An overdose is when you take too much of a foreign substance that usually leads to heart failure. It can be an accidental outcome of self poisoning or medication.

Sadly but true, these drugs could cause addiction and broken families. Fortunately, there is many rehab programs that can help. Long-term drug rehab has proven to be the most effective form of substance abuse treatment for teens.

Obama and Healthcare

Even before President Obama took office, healthcare was a hot topic. Since his election, the buzz surrounding his ideas and the ideas of others has reached the ears of millions of students. Many are wondering just what exactly the healthcare reform will mean for them and how it will affect their families.

New Mexico has one of the lowest percentages of insured citizens in the United States. Of these 441,000 uninsured people, 90,000 are 18 or younger. In response to numbers like these across the nation, President Obama signed the Children's Health Insurance Reauthorization Act last February, which provides health care to four million previously uninsured children. However, there are millions of other people of all ages that still need health insurance.

In his televised address to Congress and the public last September, President Obama explained the basics of his proposed bill, cleared up a few rumors about it, and asked Congress to come to him with their ideas, in addition to the plans proposed by the five committees specifically formed to do so. "We know we must reform this system. The question is how," the President stated, encouraging ideas from both parties.

President Obama's proposed reform plan includes measures for protecting families from bankruptcy or debt because of costs, guaranteeing choice of doctors and health care plans, investing in prevention and wellness, assuring affordable health coverage for all Americans, maintaining coverage for people with pre-existing medical conditions, and requiring that all Americans have basic health insurance. "...Parent's will be able to take their kids to the doctor's office when they're ill, and seniors will be able to afford their medications. What's the harm in the U.S. taking a stand for the welfare of its people...?" adds Danielle Turner.

However, not everyone agrees with President Obama's plan. His plan and others' contains a national health coverage program that would provide healthcare only to those currently without it and would not be paid for by the government or by taxes, which many fear, but by premiums and money already being spent on "wastes" in the current healthcare system. Many Americans and members of Congress fear this idea is too socialist, would add to the country's already high deficit, and still believe taxes will be raised, among other concerns. In his defense, President Obama believes this option would force private insurance companies to keep their costs competitively low.

Another hot issue, especially with families, is how his plan will be paid for. President Obama explained that most will be covered by channeling "wastes" in the current health care system over to his plan. He also assured that taxes will not be raised and under no circumstances will money be added to America's deficit.

There is still plenty of work and compromise to be done before any sort of reform is enacted. Because any given side of a topic has presented logical points for their argument, it is hard to say what the end result will be and how it will affect America's future.
