Many students missed an important speech this summer by our new President Barack Obama.
President Barack Obama is in Egypt on June 6, 2009, at Cairo University is giving a speech to Muslim communities. He starts out by thanking the University for letting him give his speech. He says, “We meet at a time of tension between Muslim and Americans, which we have had tension with for years.”
President Barack Obama talks about the fact that after we stop the threat we can turn over a new leaf with Muslims. Mr. Aimemn President Dr. Zarfual- Islam said, “After long tension with Bush, we can hopefully have peace with Americans.” Many people also agreed saying that they loved what Obama said. Other politicians in Muslim communities agree.
Some people, however, like Senator Henry Reid of New Jersey and Senator Robert Mendez say, “Now that he is President, he can’t speak for the whole party.” Other people agree with that, too. Now the senators are speaking against President Barack Obama’s speech. Though what people are saying is President Obama thinks that we should not be enemies and that we should be in peace. He emphasizes that it’s not going to happen over night.
President Barack Obama also talks about after this war we will leave and take only what we brought with us. Then he is going to lend about 2.5 billon dollars to Muslim communities to help there economy. He talks about how every time someone gets their hands on nuclear weapons, there is a chance of a nuclear war. He asks the Muslims to not engage in nuclear activity.
Then he talks about how many of Americans and Muslims died in this war, and we must unit together to stop this problem. That way we can both get rid of this common enemy. He also tells the Muslim community that he treats them as his equals and nothing else.
President Obama says, finally, that we all may have different beliefs, but we’re all the same; we’re humans. That let’s us try to fight together against our enemies, not with each other.
Manzano High School kids all said he was straight to the point and serious. “I thought he was very enlightening that he could bring peace to everyone,” said Billy Huntsman. Others also disagreed.
The conclusion to what everyone said was that this speech from Cairo had both good and bad points. It depends how you look at the speech, but we’ll have to see how it ends. There are still more speeches yet to come.

Did you know that every year nearly 900,000,000 trees are cut down to provide Americans paper and pulp mills? Not even all of the paper is used! The United States alone wastes approximately 749 pounds of paper a year per person!
Recycling is reusing materials in order or changed forms. Paper, plastic, aluminum cans, glass and metal cans call all be recycled.
Recycling is very important and has many benefits that include saving energy, land space, money, creating new jobs, reducing water and air pollution, and preserving homes for wildlife. These are some good benefits that we should consider.
In many of our classrooms here at Manzano, we have boxes labeled “cans only” and “paper only.” Is there enough being done in our school? Senior Marina Chavez doesn’t think so. “No, I don’t think we are doing enough because you never see recycling bins anywhere outside of classrooms. I think we should have recycling bins around campus, not just in classrooms.”
“Of course I recycle. All the time. When I’m at home, we collect soda cans and newspaper, and we take them to the recycling center,” explains sophomore Nicole White after being asked if she recycles outside of school.
If you are looking to recycle outside of school but don’t know where to take it, there are some places here in Albuquerque and in Tijeras that will take just about anything from paper, plastic and aluminum cans, to cardboard, metal clothes hangers and magazines.
- City of Albuquerque Recycling Drop-Off Site (505) 761-8100, 1500 Walter Street SE
- East Mountain Transfer Station (505) 281-9110, 711 Hwy 66 East Tijeras, NM, 87059
Here are some easy tips to help you out and go green!
- Don’t get bottled water – Instead of bottled water, get a reusable bottle. This will also save money.
- Turn off your lights – This is easy to do. Turn off the lights when they’re not being used. Again, money saved.
- Get reusable grocery bags – Plain and simple; it saves plastic bags from being used.
- Plant a tree – It’s good for the air, and it can keep you cool.
- Walk or ride your bike when you can – If you have to go somewhere close, consider your legs or bike to take you there; it’s better for the environment and gives you a workout.
- Use both sides of your paper – You waste less paper. Easy.
- Shorten your showers – Every minute you cut from showering saves about 5 gallons of water. The less time you take, the lower you impact our environment.
You should definitely consider making recycling a part of your daily routine, Monarchs! Try it, it’s simple to do. Make it easy and start off with paper and soda cans. Our future needs us!
