Pathways to Bilingual Seal at Manzano High School

 

To get a Bilingual Seal students must

• complete 4 credits in one foreign language with a grade of C or better each semester.
• complete 4 credits in English with a grade of C or better for each semester.
• have an overall GPA of 2.0 or above.
• In their senior year, have a transcript review with the Bilingual Coordinator and take the AVANT test.  Depending on the score of that test, the student can receive the NM State Bilingual Seal, NM Global Seal and the NM Functional Seal.

The AVANT test is a very rigorous 4-part test that takes 2-3 hours to complete.  It is given in the first semester of the school year.  The test consists of listening, speaking, reading comprehension and writing.  The test is completely in Spanish and on-line.  There is no cost for this test.  There are no re-takes, unless the student takes this test in their Junior year.

Pathways:

• Complete Spanish/German I,II,III and IV with a grade of C or better for each semester. Have your transcripts reviewed at the beginning of your Senior year.  Take the AVANT test.
• If you speak and understand Spanish, take and pass with a C or better Spanish Language Arts I in 9^th, Spanish Language Arts II in 10th, Spanish III and IV Dual Credit (get CNM credits for free!) in 11^th or 12th, have the Bilingual Coordinator review your transcripts at the beginning of your Senior year, take the AVANT test.
• If you are taking a foreign language at CEC, for example Japanese, and you take it for 4 years (or have 4 credits in the same foreign language) you qualify to take an alternate test for the Bilingual Seal.  Students must make arrangements for a proficiency test such as the AP, IB, or another proficiency test in that language.  The test needs to be done in the first semester to allow for grading.  Please be aware that APS does not pay for these alternate tests. 

Caminos al Sello Binlingüe en Manzano

Para recibir el Sello Bilingüe el estudiante ha de haber passado 4 clases de español con un grado de C or major; 4 clases de inglés con un grado de C or major; y en su último año tener un promedio de 2.0 o major.  El/La Coordinador Bilingüe tendrá que revisar el transcrito del estudiante para verificar que es candidato para el sello y por último el candidato tendrá que tomar y pasar el examen AVANT.  Este examen es gratis y se toma el primer semestre de los años 11 o 12 (depende del camino que tome el estudiante).

Caminos:

• Tomar y pasar con un grado de C or major Español I, II, III y IV.  Ponerse en contacto con el Coordinador Bilingüe al principio de su último año para inscribirse a tomar  el examen AVANT.  El estudiante tiene que sacar un 4 o más para recibir el sello.  Si el estudiante saca un 5 ó 6 en todas las secciones del examen recibirá el Sello Bilingüe Estatal y el Sello Global.  Si saca 7 en todas las secciones, recibirá el sello Funcional encima de las otras dos.
• Si su estudiante entiende y habla español, pero no tiene confianza en leerlo ni escribirlo, debe inscribirse en Spanish Language Arts (SLA) I y II.  Ofrecemos una clase de Español ¾ Dual Credit que es un curso avanzado donde estudian literatura.  Aunque la clase se da en Manzano, el estudiante recibe un credito de español cada semestre (en vez de medio crédito) y 3 creditos universitarios para cada semestre ya que es una clase de CNM.  El estudiante tendrá que tener su transcrito verificado por el Coodinador Bilingüe y tomar el examen AVANT en el primer semestre.
• Si el estudiante ha estudiado 4 años de otro idioma (en CEC) también puede recibir un Sello Bilingüe.  En este caso el estudiante tendrá que aportar el costo de un examen de proficiencia en el idioma.  El examen puede ser AP, IB, u otra aprobada por el Distrito APS.
